Hi. I’m Denise Myer, I’m the passionate and committed candidate for Reno City Council, Ward 3. Reno stands as a city I am proud to call home. Its immense diversity not only adds to its charm but also fuels its potential for becoming an even better place to live. To achieve this, we must embark on a journey of sensible economic growth, ensuring affordability and sustainable land-use policies. When elected, as a member of the city council, I pledge to uphold Reno's long-term fiscal growth and prioritize fiscally responsible decisions, safeguarding taxpayer money.
In Reno, there is a crucial need for a certain standard of services. From public safety to parks and infrastructure, these services play a pivotal role in maintaining our community's well-being. It is imperative that we optimize their efficiency, especially considering the rapid growth that the city of Reno is experiencing. By expanding our police force, we can ensure that our community feels safe, secure, and confident in relying on these essential services whenever the need arises.
We are confronted with a pressing issue - homelessness. However, it is essential to comprehend that being homeless does not merely imply lacking a physical abode. The plight of homelessness is intertwined with various factors, including mental illness and insufficient availability of affordable housing for our workforce.
In this thriving city that I proudly call home, fostering smart economic growth is essential. One of the key strategies in achieving this goal is through the encouragement and support of small businesses, particularly those located in the downtown area, as well as the food truck vendors.
It is crucial that those who represent Reno’s residents are elected, not appointed. The democratic process should be upheld, and when a vacancy occurs, I firmly believe that a special election should be conducted to ensure the voice of the people is heard. It is essential that the resident's right to choose their representative is respected. Unlike appointed officials, elected representatives have the backing of their constituents, giving them a stronger foundation of support and validity in their decisions.
To effectively represent Ward 3, it is essential to listen to the concerns and aspirations of its residents. I pledge to not only listen attentively but also to actively seek out diverse perspectives. I’m proud to announce I’m running for City County, so the residents of Ward 3 can have an elected voice. I’d appreciate your vote.
LIST OF COMMUNITY ISSUES
Housing Affordability
As of April 2021, Reno was ranked 21 out of 100 of the least affordable cities in the country.
Statistics show a 1 bedroom apartment has increased over 90% since 2017. The homeless problem has also increased as a result of rising home and rental costs and low inventory. We can not continue on this path. Fixing the problem won’t be easy, but I am ready to take on the challenge. No one knows what the solution is, but it will take a collaborative effort of all the commissioners and developers to come up with hard solutions.
Transparency and Accountability
In an elected office, being transparent in all transactions is essential to voters. Transparency promotes accountability, strengthening our government system. Information provided to our constituents should be accurate, complete, and available without unnecessary delay.
Law Enforcement Resources
When other cities defunded the police, the results were disastrous. As a county commissioner, it is my responsibility to ensure our law enforcement receives the funding they need to do their job and enforce the law. I want our children and grandchildren to be safe in our neighborhoods.
